About

Aleksander Zain (1992) is a dancer, choreographer, and new media artist. Born in Belgrade, he danced in multiple pieces of the independent scene in Serbia, as well as in Heartefact House theater. He also collaborated with Station- Service for Contemporary Dance and co-authored a dance podcast, “From Body to Body”. Currently based in Berlin, he completed a Dance Intensive with Tanzfabrik Berlin Schule, was a fellow with Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, and intern dancer with Theater Bremen and the resident dance company Unusual Symptoms.

His solo dance piece “Body Confessions”(2021) was performed internationally and has received recognition as an important part of the queer choreography from the ex-Yugoslav region. Another dance solo, “TENSION”, was developed through the Akademie Schloss Solitude fellowship, and premiered in Germany in 2025. The piece was in an official selection of the BITEF festival 2025, and was shown on ne:Bitef in the same year.

Zain’s separate practice in new media spans extensive experience in long-durational performance art and video installations. He was a re-performer for Marina Abramović’s retrospective The Cleaner, exhibited multiple times at Venice International Performance Art Week, and is a co-founder of the international nomadic platform for performance art IMPORT/EXPORT.

Zain also teaches contemporary floorwork and occasionally collaborates with Vorspiel, a queer sports association in Berlin.
